Collaborative Fieldwork session in China
From last February 28th to March 10th I participated to the workshop Mapping Spaces For Making in China organized by a team from the Institute for Area and Global Studies from the College of Humanities at EPFL.
Together with ethnographers, makers, media archaeologists, designers, architects, geographers and artists, we did collaborative fieldwork using our knowledge and tools to map out the stories of making in the cities of Shanghai and Shenzhen.
The Shanghai leg took place from February 28 to March 2 with a public restitution on March 3 where we presented the project about mobile phone repair in Switzerland. The Shenzhen leg took place from March 6 to 9 and ended up with a book assembly of a fanzine we produced during the workshop.
The workshop was a great opportunity for us to grasp a better understanding of the repair and refurb networks in China. We had the chance to visit places for the production, recycle and refurb of electronic devices. We observed and produced data about the practices surrounding used electronic devices in China – with a particular focus on the mobile phone repair and resale markets.
