Seminar: Benjamin Gaulon

“Artisanal Electronics: Digital Repair Cultures” was a mini-conference we held at July 6.

Moving from anthropology to arts and design with Benjamin Gaulon (Recyclism / The New School Parsons, Paris) we moved from luxury to digital trash. Interested in e-waste, trash, glitch, zombie and media archaeology, his work explores the failure and the limits of technology. Often working with metaphors, the artistic interventions he presented question the way we consume digital technology, the future of data in a world where we increasingly generate them, the tactics made by bigger firms to forbid users to hack their system. Playing with technology his work makes visible some range of contradictions in the way we use technology also showing how working with trash might enable one to explore more.
