Seminar: Yvan Schulz

“Artisanal Electronics: Digital Repair Cultures” was a mini-conference we held at July 6.

The anthropologist Yvan Schulz (School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford)– in line with Clements’ presentation- focused on smartphone refurbishment in China. First stressing how the electronic industry is usually perceived and represented this talk highlighted the fact that independent smartphone refurbishing and resale market, a sector within the electronic industry doesn’t stand out although it should. This large network of small players (individuals, family factories) has an important scale in the Chinese market.
